S3E27: Leadership is a Show Not a Tell with Sid Sutton

Season #3

Sid has worked with FTSE 100 companies, invested in, and mentored over 30 SME businesses, and had served as the CEO of Sale Sharks rugby for three years. What he discovered is that the most valuable asset in all sectors is people.

Sid became involved in the sports sector because of its unique focus on human potential. He wanted to explore what lessons sport could offer and how they might overlap with the business world.

As a CEO, he faced common challenges: limited resources, no increase in budget, limited beliefs and a product with limited room for change. All challenges are shared by leaders in many organisations.

Achieving their objectives required a shift in behaviour. The same principles applied to maximising performance both on and off the field. To increase productivity Sid knew he needed a fully engaged workforce. Most importantly his first step was to employ a leadership style that demonstrated and embodied his message rather than staying at the usual level of just words on a wall.

And this is why I am excited to bring you this conversation with Sid. I’ve heard many practitioners and coaches discuss the gap between the coaching staff and the CEO level, and so Sid's views and experience on bridging this gap is a powerful insight for all who work in performance sport and within in business outside of sport.
