What Simone Biles is Teaching Us about Personal Mastery

leadership and relationships personal mastery Aug 05, 2021

You may have heard the name Simone Biles in recent weeks, even if you’re not into the Olympics.

Biles is one of the greatest, most decorated gymnasts of all time and was expected to take home at least three more in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

But her medal achievements are not what have got her headlines. Instead she withdrew herself from competition, and by doing so stood up for her well-being in a sports world that commodifies athletes and values winning at all costs.

Now I’m grateful to have spent over 16 years of my previous career working within these Olympic environments, so I have a unique insight into this topic.

And one of my main messages to you all on this channel is that we can embody the very ordinary qualities that lead to an extraordinary human life and expression.

Yet the example of Simone Biles story goes deeper than sport and its repercussions affect you and I more profoundly than you may realise.

And this is what I want to discuss in todays video.

I’ll cover:

  1. Why the Simone Biles story is important
  2. Why criticism of Simone Biles is likely a symptom of a bigger cultural problem beyond sport
  3. Why this matters to you and I
